| The war against the Vilani |
Introduction:
Terrans are the most genetically diverse species of sentient beings known. Massive differences exist, and only in the past thirty years has Terran civilization been united. External physical differences abound, but internally there is little individual variation.
Vilani are also Homo Sapiens , probably the last thing expected by the Terran First Contact. Vilani have a much tighter genetic grouping, with a fairly uniform external aspect. The typical Vilani is black-haired, olive to darkish skinned, brown eyed and tall. They are closest in appearance to Terrans of the Indian district. The occasional Vilani do fall outside of this norm, but it is a fairly rare individual. The Vilani organise their society into a caste system, where assignment to caste is usually determined by birth. There is however, no religious meaning to one's position. Consensus and careful planning is the Vilani way, making them slow to react to sudden changes, but extremely dangerous once on the offensive.
The Vilani revere their cooks, which apparently have to perform some fairly developed chemistry to turn local "food" into something edible. Cooks are placed at the same level as specialist doctors or religious figures in Vilani society. Vilani doctors however are treated as tradesmen, due to the lack of pathogens in Vilani space. This lack of pathogens may explain the longevity of Vilani, who regularly experience 150-200 Terran year lifespans. As the Vilani conquered more of space, they imposed their society on all other species encountered. It is feared that given a chance, they would do this to the Terran Confederation, erasing millennia of Earth's history. The Vilani have encountered a number of humanoid species, with minor differences to Humans, and a few species of profoundly non-humanoid structure. Currently the Terran Confederation has not met any of these beings, but have gained second-hand reports from captured Vilani.
The single most important non-human race is the Vegans, a tall, upright, bipedal sentient race, they seem to be perfectly adapted to their desert home. Intelligence reports show that the Vilani have had considerable influence on Vegan society, imposing a caste structure on the Vegans, along with harsh treatment. Hopefully the Terran Confederation can find itself with a friend in Known Space once contact is properly established.
